Some plants, such as certain succulents and certain types of orchids, use a different mechanism called crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) to perform photosynthesis.
These plants open their stomata (tiny openings on the surface of leaves) during the night to take in carbon dioxide and minimize water loss during the hot daytime.
As a result, they release a small amount of oxygen during the night. However, the oxygen released is much less compared to the amount released during daylight photosynthesis.
