The music world mourns the loss of Zakir Hussain, The Tabla maestro who passed away at the age of 73 due to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in San Francisco.
His death was confirmed by his family in an official statement on Monday. Hussain, a child prodigy who began playing the tabla at a young age under the guidance of his father, Ustad Allarakha, leaves behind a rich legacy that has touched the hearts of music enthusiasts worldwide.
Hussain was recognized with numerous awards and honors, including India’s prestigious Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.
His remarkable contributions to the world of music were also acknowledged internationally, earning him three Grammy Awards in March 2024one with John McLaughlin and Shakti, and two for his work with Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Rakesh Chaurasia.
Notably, Hussain made history as the first Indian to win three Grammy Awards in a single night, showcasing his exceptional talent and dedication to his craft.
