Court granted bail to woman for murder committed in self-defence

Mumbai: A sessions court in Mumbai has granted bail to a woman who was arrested for the murder of a man she claimed she killed in self-defence during an attempted rape. She was released on bail after spending three years in jail.

According to records, the incident occurred on June 20, 2021, when the deceased man, under the influence of alcohol, approached her around 2 am and made inappropriate advances. In response, she defended herself by hitting him with a stone, resulting in his death.

Subsequently, she was arrested based on an eyewitness account. Advocate SS Sawalkar, representing the woman, presented the postmortem report which indicated that the deceased was intoxicated at the time of the incident. The court accepted the lawyer’s argument that the woman, who lives alone, acted in self-defence when she attacked the young man.

Following this, the court granted bail to the woman based on circumstantial evidence and its conviction that the young man was indeed under the influence of alcohol.
