21-Year-Old Pilot’s Family Donates Organs, Saving Five Lives After Tragic Accident

The family of 21-year-old trainee pilot, Cheshta Bishnoi, donated her organs on Wednesday, saving the lives of five individuals suffering from chronic diseases.

With Bishnoi’s act of donation, the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) marked its 67th deceased organ donation for the year 2024.

Aarti Gokhale, chief transplant coordinator at ZTCC Pune, commending the family’s extraordinary gesture, said, “It is truly an act of courage and kindness. The family of Cheshta Bishnoi not only chose to make a selfless decision but also helped save five lives of people who were struggling for survival.”

Sharing more details about the case, Gokhale said, “Cheshta originally hailed from Khetolai village in Pokhran, Rajasthan, and was pursuing her dream of becoming a pilot in Pune. On December 9, tragedy struck when Cheshta’s car met with a horrific accident while traveling from Baramati to Bhigwan in Indapur tehsil. The accident, reportedly caused by overspeeding, claimed the lives of two passengers, while Cheshta and another individual, Mangal Singh, suffered severe injuries.

The traumatic accident left Cheshta with severe head injuries. She was rushed to Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune, where medical teams fought tirelessly to save her. However, the injuries proved too threatening, and she was later declared brain-dead on December 17. Her grieving family, father Jyoti Prakash Bishnoi, who runs a gas agency in Pokhran, and her brother, upon counselling, displayed strength and agreed to donate her organs. This turned their tragedy into hope for others, ultimately saving the lives of multiple individuals,” she said.

The organs that were donated included the liver, heart, kidney, and pancreas, which were allocated to Ruby Hall Clinic. Another kidneypancreas combination was shared with DY Patil Medical College as per organ allocation guidelines. Among the recipients there was also a paediatric patient, whose life was saved by this act of generosity, informed Gokhale.

While sharing an update about the recipients, Gokhale said, “All five recipients are now stable and recovering well.” Lastly, the medical community and family members gathered to bid Cheshta’s mortal remains a heartfelt farewell at the hospital. Her life was honoured with respect by all who knew her, as well as by the hospital staff,” concluded Gokhale.
