Communal Tensions After Stones, Shoes Hurled At Ganapathi Procession – 46 taken into custody

Tension gripped Nagamangala town in Mandya and prohibitory orders were issued after stones and shoes were hurled at a Ganapathi procession on Sep.11.

According to reports, the incident happened while the Ganesha procession was proceeding for idol immersion, thus sparking communal tensions in the town.

Later, members of the Hindu community protested outside a local police station, seeking action against the miscreants, who allegedly belonged to a different community.

Police officials had to resort to lathi-charge after the crowd attempted to torch a few pushcarts, two-wheelers, and a cloth shop.

The Ganesh idol was immersed under the surveillance of police personnel after the situation was brought under control. Later, the administration imposed Section 144 (disallowing assembly of four or more people) in the town to prevent any untoward incidents. Meanwhile, additional forces were dispatched from Mysuru to step up security in the area. Nearly 46 taken into custody by Police. Probe underway.
