Thoibi Mukherjee, a 16-year-old student from Bardhaman, West Bengal, achieved a remarkable feat by topping her school in the Class 10 state board exams.
Despite battling a high fever during the exams, Thoibi showcased her determination and secured 674 marks. However, her health issues were just the beginning of a tragic sequence of events.
After the exams, Thoibi was diagnosed with jaundice, which had severely damaged her liver. Despite efforts to save her, including treatment in Hyderabad, she lost her battle for life on April 16.
The exam results were announced recently, bringing both joy and sorrow to her school, Uma Rani Gorai Mahila Kalyan School. The news of her achievement was met with tears and a sense of loss, as students and teachers alike mourned her passing.
Headmistress Papari Mukherjee recalled Thoibi’s struggles during the exams, where she would often rest her head on her arms due to exhaustion. “We wish she had not tried so hard… Could have skipped the exam this year. At least she would still have been among us,” she said, expressing her grief.
Thoibi’s grandmother, Sabita Mukherjee, also shared her pain, saying, “She would have been so happy but it was not to be.”
The school community is still coming to terms with the loss of a brilliant student who left an indelible mark with her determination and academic excellence.
